OCR: Although some animals can use primitive tools man is the only animal to actually Make tools. The earliest evidence of this comes from east Africa about 2.75 million years ago. These early tools are crudely chipped stones used as axes, scrapers and knives. They are the first real evidence of man's growing intelligence. The early toolmaker is known as Homo Habilis or 'handy man'. It is now agreed that he must have had some sort of language to teach the skill to his children - probably simple grunting sounds. Crudely chipped stones are the earliest form of technology and were not bettered for a million years or so when humans developed more elaborate hand axes and more effective stone weapons.
